The truth is, hiring a professional web designer or design agency Is not for everyone.

Being a digital design agency you would assume that my answer to this question is going to be completely biased, that I would say that every company should stay clear of website builders such as Wix or Squarespace and hire a web designer to build the very best website possible.

You would be wrong….If you’re a new business on a tight budget, then using an affordable website builder is exactly what you should be doing. If you have any computer knowledge, have the patience and are willing to learn, then it is possible for most, and I say most (not everyone) to build their own website.

Why am I telling you this?

Are we the only web design company in the world who doesn’t want to sell….websites! Of course, we want new clients and lots of them, but we also have to be mindful that not all new businesses have the time or the budget to hire a web designer or promote/advertise their new site.

There is so much more to building a successful online business than just hiring a web designer to build you a new website and expecting sales and enquiries to come flooding in….that won’t happen!

Websites take work, budget and patience. A website or online business is just like any other business, you need to advertise and get it out there in front of your potential customers through Social media, SEO, Paid advertising, content marketing, blogging to name just a few.

If it’s in your budget and you understand the limitations of a web designer, that we can’t produce a website that will change the fortunes of your company overnight, then hiring a web designer (preferably Putty Squared) is a no-brainer when it comes to what is best for your business.

When you hire a website designer, you are hiring a professional. Someone whose job it is to understand design best practices, fonts, colours, harmony and balance. They also have an understanding of user interface, information architecture, user experience, digital marketing and how design impacts visitor flow. All of these skills are brought to the table when you hire a professional.

So in conclusion…

If you aren’t making much money, don’t have much money or have an unestablished business then you should go with the most affordable option available and not spend your money hiring a design agency.

If you are making money, value your time or your employees time and feel that you are losing potential business by not having a professionally designed site, then you should hire a professional.
